Role synopsis

IST is BP’s trading organisation. It supports the BP group globally by trading BP’s equity energy products and by trading speculatively on global energy markets.
BIRR (Business Intelligence, Reporting and Regulatory) is responsible for maintaining and extending IST’s BI capability. Our traditional BI assets are based on two key platforms: SAP BI and Informatica, and we have invested extensively in these technologies.
We are now looking to go further. We are building more visual solutions using PowerBI and Tableau, and we are about to start developing new BI capabilities on our data lake.

The role has two main areas of accountability. The first is to liaise with BI architects, to contribute to and help implement the 3-5 year BI strategy. The second is to lead design activity across IST’s BI estate.

Key accountabilities

Articulate the relative capabilities of BI tools, recommend how and when tools should be applied.
Support other IT&S teams in applying the tools and in the definition and adoption of standards and guidelines.
Drive BI tools into new areas and expand their usage e.g. data lake, BI apps, analytics.
Collaborate with platform teams to ensure on-going quality of service for BI tools e.g. cloud, upgrades, issue resolution, new tools, new features.
Manage end-to-end BI solution design on projects and BAU activities; ensure the quality and accuracy of designs.
Support BI analysts in requirements discovery and elaboration; ensure alignment of solution design with functional and non-functional requirements.
Produce and maintain data models across the BI data platforms; ensure the alignment of physical with logical models.
Liaise with transaction-pipe teams to maintain the integrity of existing BI assets.
Support BI teams in resolving design and data issues.

Essential Education


Essential experience and job requirements

You have good experience with BI tools at an architecture or strategy level and a deep understanding of their capabilities and applications.
You have modelled data marts and/or data warehouses and understand the importance of reviewing and socialising models with team members and other key project partners.
You have coordinated the analysis effort on small to medium sized development projects and have worked with business users on the elaboration of requirements and the joint design of screens, reports, dashboards etc.
You have collaborated with project/delivery managers in the creation of plans and the pursuit of continuous improvement.
You have experience of projects through the full project lifecycle.
You have liaised with analysts and designers on other application teams to assure design integrity where changes impact multiple applications.
You have guided the test planning effort and been responsible for the quality of test plans and scripts.
You have supported other team members by mentoring them and contributing to their continuous development.
You have worked in an agile environment and will be familiar with agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).

?Technical Skills

SAP BI 4.2 platform
Business Objects 4x and above universe design and IDT
?In-depth knowledge of a leading visualization tool (Power BI, Tableau, Lumira, Qlik or Spotfire)
?Strong SQL, able to write and debut complex queries
?Data modelling (relational and dimensional) and data modelling tools e.g. ER Studio
?Data mart and data warehouse design
?A good appreciation of ETL tools, preferably Informatica
?A good appreciation of SAP BW physical modelling

Desirable criteria and qualifications

Experience with energy or commodity trading. Our BI assets support the business in areas such as physical operations, middle office, trading operations, risk and front office analytics, so knowledge in any of the following areas would be beneficial:

The mechanics of physical trading
OTC and exchange-traded derivatives
Trading concepts such as exposure, P&L, mark-to-market, price series
